Bold creamy white stripes characterize this most arresting of all the variegated Grasses. A 6-8-foot clump in the garden or planted in a large container will grab your attention all summer long. Prefers sun and moist soil. Z. 6-9

Photo of Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Fšrster' Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Fšrster' - Feather Reed Grass
Justifiably considered one of the most outstanding ornamental Grasses for the garden, Feather Reed Grass has shiny leaves that grow in an upright, arching clump 18-24 inches tall. In early summer 4-6-foot flowering stalks with subtly colored plumes of light purple emerge from the tight clumps, later changing to buff in the late summer garden. 'Karl Förster', commemorating the legendary German plantsman, creates a wonderful vertical accent that sways gently even in the slightest whisper of air. Furthermore, being sterile, it does not create a weed problem. Feather Reed Grass grows well in moist, rich soil in full sun. Z. 5-9
CALKAR Full gallon - $12.95

Carex flacca (glauca) 'Blue Zinger' - Carnation Grass
A great ground cover and one tough cookie for full sun or light shade, this Carex reaches only about 12 inches in height. It is a clumper but also spreads very slowly to form a mat of gray-green foliage with silvery blue undersides. Drought tolerant and adaptable even to salt spray, it could form a nice permanent underplanting, for example, in a bed of tall annuals. Z. 5-9
CARBLU 2-qt. pot - $9.95

Carex laxiculmis Bunny Blue - Sedge

Hakonechloa macra - Green Hakone Grass
This rare Grass, native to Japanese woodlands, is more commonly seen in gardens in the variegated form, but this all-green form is nice in its own low-key way. With arching leaves, it's as elegant as bamboo but without the invasiveness. Hakone Grass is particularly valuable because it thrives in shade, unlike other grasses. It is at its best in light shade in rich, moist soil that is well drained, where it grows slowly to form a luxuriant low-growing clump. Z. 6-9
HAKMAC 2-qt. pot - $11.95

Hakonechloa macra 'Albo-Striata' - White Variegated Hakone Grass
This rare white-striped form of Hakone Grass is somewhat more sun tolerant than 'Aureola'. See H. macra for cultural details. Z. 6-9
HAKALB 1.5-qt. pot - $11.95

Hakonechloa macra 'All Gold' - Golden Hakone Grass
'All Gold' has chartreuse leaves with golden highlights. Unlike its close relative 'Aureola', which tends to weep, 'All Gold' has spiky, upright foliage and grows as a groundcover. Part shade or dappled light is best. Z. 6-8
HAKALL 1.5-qt. pot - $12.95

Photo of Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' - Golden Variegated Hakone Grass
The most popular form of Hakone Grass, and deservedly so with its elegant arching leaves striped yellow and green. In fall the leaves take on a ruddy look. Like other forms of Hakone Grass, 'Aureola' thrives in shade, unlike other Grasses, and is wonderful for brightening a dark corner. When grown in deep shade, the variegation is lime green, but with part sun the variegation is golden yellow. A sumptuous Grass, deserving of a place in every shady garden. Z. 6-9
HAKAUR 1.5-qt. pot - $12.95

Hakonechloa macra 'Beni Kaze' - Hakone Grass
We're in the process of collecting every kind of Hakone Grass we can lay our hands on, and 'Beni Kaze' is the latest addition. It has green leaves in summer, but in fall these leaves turn a brilliant red to inflame your perennial border. Grows 6-8 inches high and about twice as wide. Z. 6-9
HAKBEN 1.5-qt. pot - $11.95

Liriope muscari 'Pee Dee Gold Ingot' - Liriope
Slender yellow-green leaves form a clump about 10 inches high, and in late summer lavender flower spikes add to the colorful display. Spice up your shade garden! Z. 6-9
LIRPEE 1.5-qt. pot - $7.95

Miscanthus sinensis 'Gold Bar' - Miscanthus
A knockout new introduction, 'Gold Bar' has green leaves heavily banded with yellow stripes from base to tip—elegant but showy at the same time. It grows slowly upright to about 5 feet in eight years. In late summer burgundy inflorescences sway in the breeze. PP 15193. Z. 5-9
MISGOL 1.5-qt. pot - $8.95

Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' - Black Mondo Grass

OPHNIG 1.5-qt. pot - $9.95

Sesleria nitida - Gray Moor Grass
A neat clump of dense grayish blue foliage, Gray Moor Grass is stunning on its own or as a backdrop for flowering perennials. Grows well in sun, but it also appears to tolerate light shade and remain full and compact. Grows to about 20 inches high and wide with nearly black flower panicles stretching above the foliage in early spring. Z. 4-8
SESNIT Full gallon - $12.95
