Photo of Acanthus spinosus Acanthus spinosus - Bear's Breeches
We love this stately perennial, which inspired the decoration on Greek Corinthian columns. Primarily a foliage plant, the rich green leaves are deeply divided and look fresh all season, even during warm, humid summers. In late spring long spikes of off-white flowers interspersed with purplish bracts arise from the basal foliage. It is easy to grow in full sun or part shade, but it must have sharp drainage to prosper. USDA Hardiness Zones (5)6-10
ACASPI Full gallon - $15.95

Photo of Achillea millefolium 'Paprika' Achillea millefolium 'Paprika' - Yarrow
Exciting new colors have given us a reason to put old-fashioned Yarrows back in our gardens. 'Paprika' has flattened ruby red flowers with yellow centers—one of the handsomest of the Yarrows. Full sun and well-drained soil are all that's required. Even with little or no fertilizer, it'll bloom its head off from June to September. Z. 3-9
ACHPAP 1.5-qt. pot - $7.95

Photo of Achillea x 'Terra Cotta' Achillea x 'Terra Cotta' - Yarrow
Bright peach flowers slowly turn to rich earthy shades of brick-red and orange. The pronounced silvery foliage is another plus. Z. 3-9
ACHTER 1.5-qt. pot - $7.95

Photo of Agastache 'Blue Fortune' Agastache 'Blue Fortune' - African Lily
This hybrid selection sends up foot-tall spikes of lightly fragrant blue flowers with a bonus thrown in: Bruised leaves give off a licorice aroma. This Anise Hyssop grows 3-5 feet and prefers full sun or light shade and well-drained soil. (Probably a hybrid of A. foeniculum). Z. 6-9
AGABLU Full gallon - $11.95

Photo of Agastache 'Purple Haze' Agastache 'Purple Haze' - Hybrid Anise Hyssop
It's a welcome development to have breeders occupying themselves with this easy-to-grow genus that introduces so much color over a long period into the summer garden. 'Purple Haze' produces wave upon wave of smoky violet blue flowers on foot-high stalks, and the plant itself grows about 2-3 feet high and wide. Z. 6-9
AGAPUR Full gallon - $11.95

  Agave 'Spot' - Hardy Agave
Probably a Manfreda, which is hardy and deciduous, rather than a true Agave, 'Spot' has broad succulent leaves marked with maroon spots, and the spotting becomes more prominent as the plant grows older. The plant grows to about 18 inches high and wide, but in summer 4-foot-tall flower spikes bear fragrant pale flowers. Not bothered by heat or humidity, 'Spot' does require good drainage. Z. 6-10
AGASPO 1.5-qt. pot - $11.95

  Alchemilla erythropoda - Alchemilla
A groundcover for shade and evenly moist soil, this dainty perennial forms a bun-shaped cushion of scalloped gray or bluish green leaves, and it grows about 6-8 inches high with slightly greater spread. A neat plant for tucking in your woodland garden! Z. 3-7
ALCERY 3-qt. pot - $9.95

Amsonia 'Blue Ice' - Hybrid Blue Star
More compact than others of this genus, 'Blue Ice' grows about 12-15 inches high and wide, and the starry blue flowers are borne over several weeks in spring. The attractively tapering foliage turns bright yellow in fall. Z. 5-9
AMSBLU 3-qt. pot - $9.95

Photo of Amsonia hubrichtii Amsonia hubrichtii - Arkansas Blue Star
A superb perennial all season long. In spring light blue flowers are the attraction, while in summer we can enjoy the dark green feathery foliage. In fall we are dazzled as the foliage turns to gold—one of the most spectacular autumn displays of any perennial. Arkansas Blue Star may reach 2-3 feet with equal spread. Z. 6-9
AMSHUB 3-qt. pot - $9.95

Photo of Aquilegia alpina Aquilegia alpina - Alpine Columbine
Columbines have always enchanted us, and this species is one of the best. The rosettes of deeply divided gray green foliage produce stalks of blue flowers 1-3 feet high in spring, and this species doesn't seem to mind our hot, sticky summers as long as it's planted in light shade in rich, well-drained soil with plenty of moisture. Z. 3-8
AQUALP 2-qt. pot - $8.95

Photo of Aquilegia flabellata var. pumila 'Kurilensis Rosea' Aquilegia flabellata var. pumila 'Kurilensis Rosea' - Columbine
Pink flowers bloom in May on this dwarf Columbine to about 8 inches high. Z. 3-8
AQUKUR 1.5-qt. pot - $7.95

Aruncus 'Misty Lace' - Goat's Beard
A bushy perennial with appealing coppery-green compound foliage, 'Misty Lace' in late spring becomes a bouquet of creamy white flowers held on stems above the lacy foliage. Grows well in dappled light or morning sun with afternoon shade in evenly moist soil. Forms a clump 30 inches high by two feet wide. PP 15798. Z. 3-7
ARUMIS 1.5-qt. pot - $8.95

Asarum europaeum - European Wild Ginger
The polished kidney-shaped leaves remain evergreen in most areas and make a handsome addition to the shade garden. Z. 4-7
ASAEUR 1-qt. pot - $9.95

  Asclepias tuberosa - Butterfly Weed
As familiar as this native perennial may be, often growing along the side of the road in rural areas, it is not as common in gardens as it should be. The knockout flowers appear in summer and come in bright oranges, yellows, or, occasionally, reds, and as the common name implies, Butterfly Weed is a magnet for our lepidopteran garden guests. Z. 4-9
ASCTUB 2-qt. pot - $8.95

Photo of Aster cordifolius 'Avondale' Aster cordifolius 'Avondale' - Aster
An early-fall bloomer, 'Avondale' starts to bloom just as the summer perennials are fading. Light to darker blue flowers surround a yellow center and are borne prolifically. The lower leaves are heart-shaped, while the upper leaves are ovate to tapering. Some shade is beneficial for this plant 2-3 feet high. Z. 3-8
ASTAVO 3-qt. pot - $9.95

Photo of Aster ericoides 'Snow Flurry' Aster ericoides 'Snow Flurry' - Aster
Aster as a groundcover? Yup, that's how A. ericoides 'Snow Flurry' functions, and it's smothered with hundreds of half-inch white flowers in September. Easy to grow in full sun or part shade, it quickly forms a dense (non-invasive) mat when planted 8-12 inches apart. Be among the first to try this exciting new use for Asters! Z. 5-8
ASTSNO 3-qt. pot - $9.95

Photo of Aster hemisphaerica Route 51 Aster hemisphaerica Route 51 - Aster
A beautiful introduction by Alabama wildflower enthusiast Jan Midgley. Route 51 in Shelby County, Alabama, is where she found this plant growing. Smoky blue flowers on 2.5-foot stalks grace this plant from August to October. Just plant it in full sun and well-drained soil, and step back! Z. 6-9
ASTHEM Full gallon - $12.95

Photo of Aster laevis 'Bluebird' Aster laevis 'Bluebird' - Smooth Aster
An outstanding autumn perennial, 'Bluebird' is another recent introduction of the Mt. Cuba Center in Delaware. The former director, Richard W. Lighty, selected this Aster for its floriferousness and tidy, upright habit that requires no staking if grown in full sun. The sumptuous violet-blue flowers with golden yellow centers are borne in fall on a 4-5-foot plant amid clean, disease-free foliage that is an appealing grayish green. Not fussy about soil or moisture, 'Bluebird' can be pinched back through June to control height and form. Z. (4)5-8
ASTBLU 3-qt. pot - $9.95

Aster oblongifolius 'Dream of Beauty' - Aster
We've enjoyed the intensely blue flowers of Aster 'October Skies' for years, and now comes another selection of this native species. 'Dream of Beauty' will dazzle you with sugar-pink flowers in fall. Grows about a foot high and twice as wide. Z. 5-8
ASTDRE 3-qt. pot - $9.95

Photo of Aster oblongifolius 'October Skies' Aster oblongifolius 'October Skies' - Aster
A more demure Aster than the taller varieties, 'October Skies' is bushy and comparatively shorter-growing, with intensely blue flowers in fall. May grow to about 18 inches with equal or slightly greater spread in full sun and well-drained soil. Z. 5-8
ASTOCT 3-qt. pot - $9.95
